The game begs for warrior mechanics, depending on the race.
Beavers are heavily armored tanks, foxes are archers, harpies are mages/clerics. Firstly, this will open up additional combinations of builds for the defense of the settlement. Secondly, you can implement not only passive events in the clearings, but also the attack of some creatures on the settlement

I think this has legs if done for a specific biome! like some sort of battlefield biome where you'd gain reputation points primarily by opening glades and fighting or appeasing enemies?

This will also open up new chains of items - armor, weapons, arrows, magic (finally the sane use of scrolls), etc. The game will become deeper in mechanics and much more interesting in terms of defense
