Difficulty Selection

I have loved this game, played since early access. The one thing that made me stop playing it, and have trouble starting again is difficulty selection.

Completing higher difficulties.. the completion should be its own reward.
Content should not be locked behind higher difficulties, and engaging with a 20 prestige system should not be the progression system of the game.

Difficulty selection should be combined with the world map, selecting where you build your base. If you want a challenge, you choose a challenging location and experience unique parts of the game through that.

Selecting a difficulty and getting a smaller reward for choosing an easier difficulty feels bad for everyone involved.
If I choose a higher difficulty, I am punished by having a stressful game experience. If I choose lower, I am punished with lower rewards, and later game content even requiring me to play higher difficulties.

New players are unclear what difficulty they should choose.

Difficulty selection makes map location selection less meaningful.
